Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia have emerged as Southeast Asia’s most affordable and expat-friendly countries in 2025, according to the latest findings from the Expat Insider survey. These nations have captured the attention of expatriates worldwide due to their exceptional combination of low cost of living, vibrant cultures, and welcoming environments. As more people look to relocate to regions that offer financial ease without compromising on lifestyle quality, these Southeast Asian countries stand out as top destinations. With affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and a strong expat community, they provide cost-effective relocation options that make settling in abroad both practical and rewarding.

Vietnam has taken the top spot in the 2025 Expat Insider survey, ranking as the most affordable destination for expatriates out of 46 countries globally. According to the annual study by InterNations, which has been conducted since 2014, Vietnam’s cost-effective living continues to attract expatriates seeking a lifestyle that balances low expenses with a high standard of living.

One of the most compelling aspects of life in Vietnam is its affordability. A striking 89% of expats expressed satisfaction with the overall cost of living in the country, a clear indicator of how favorable the financial situation is for those living there. This figure surpasses the global average, where only 40% of respondents report being happy with their cost of living abroad. The survey revealed that Vietnam offers a financial environment where expatriates can enjoy life without the high price tag seen in many other popular expat destinations.

Another significant finding from the study is that 87% of expatriates in Vietnam feel that their disposable household income is enough, or more than enough, to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. In comparison, globally, only 69% of expatriates share the same sentiment about their income levels, further emphasizing how Vietnam stands out in terms of financial satisfaction for foreign residents. The ability to stretch one’s income without sacrificing quality of life is a crucial factor for expatriates when deciding where to live, and Vietnam has proven to be a top choice in this regard.

The Expat Insider study, which gathered insights from over 10,000 expatriates representing 172 nationalities worldwide, focuses on various aspects of expat life, including cost of living, financial stability, and the extent to which income supports a comfortable lifestyle. Vietnam’s leading position is not just due to its low cost of living but also the welcoming expat environment where residents can feel secure financially, without the burden of high living expenses.

While Vietnam ranks at the top for affordability, Southeast Asia continues to dominate the rankings, with five countries in the region making it to the top 10 list. Thailand, often regarded as a prime expat destination due to its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes, came in at number five. Similarly, Indonesia, known for its rich history and welcoming people, secured the sixth spot. The Philippines followed closely in seventh place, offering expats a mix of affordability and laid-back lifestyle with its stunning beaches and tropical climate. Malaysia also made its mark in the ninth position, reflecting the region’s ongoing appeal to expatriates seeking a cost-effective lifestyle without compromising on comfort.

This dominance of Southeast Asia on the list highlights the region’s rising prominence as a preferred expat destination. In addition to low costs, Southeast Asian countries offer a unique blend of cultural diversity, thriving cities, and welcoming communities that make them attractive to expatriates from around the world. The region has experienced rapid economic growth and improved infrastructure, further enhancing its appeal as a place to live and work.

What makes Southeast Asia particularly appealing is the affordability across essential aspects of life, including housing, food, healthcare, and leisure activities. Expats can find high-quality living at a fraction of the cost compared to Western countries, making the region an ideal choice for those looking to live comfortably on a budget. Furthermore, many Southeast Asian nations have become more expat-friendly, offering a wide range of services tailored to international residents, which makes the transition smoother and more manageable.

The 2025 Expat Insider survey underscores the growing attractiveness of Southeast Asia for expatriates, and Vietnam, in particular, stands as a beacon for those looking for an affordable yet fulfilling life abroad. The combination of a low cost of living, good job opportunities, and a rich cultural experience makes Vietnam, alongside other Southeast Asian countries, a top contender for expats seeking a high quality of life without the high costs associated with other popular international destinations.

Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia stand out in 2025 as Southeast Asia’s most affordable and expat-friendly countries, offering a low cost of living, vibrant cultures, and welcoming environments for cost-effective relocation.

As the trend of relocating to Southeast Asia continues, it’s clear that affordability, paired with a strong sense of community and cultural richness, will keep the region at the forefront of expat choices in the years to come. Whether it’s the affordable lifestyle in Vietnam or the broader appeal of Southeast Asia, the region is proving to be a global hub for expatriates seeking balance between work, life, and financial comfort.
